The raw material soapstone was widely exported from Swedish and Norwegian natural mineral deposits. Soapstone is a relatively soft material that is easy to work with. Pots made of soapstone were commonly used in domestic home because the material resists high temperatures and could therefore be used for kettles over an open fire. Due to their resistance to heat, broken soapstone pots were often reused as moulds.
