This painting is based on the battle that took place in 1741 between the English fleet led by Admiral Edward Vernon, and the Spanish, who were defending Cartagena de Indias. The painting shows the beginning of the battle, with several British ships forcing their way into Bocachica at the Fort of San Luis, causing the Spanish ships to withdraw.

Painted by Luis Gordillo in 1994, the painting is a copy of a lithograph from "Episodios Marítimos'' (Maritime Episodes), published in Madrid in 1849.
