Camino de Güibia, Santo Domingo, 1904.
Camino de Güibia, now known as Avenida Independencia in Santo Domingo, was home to large estates owned by the city’s elite. Here, men on horseback and on foot pass along the sandy path, framed by coconut trees and fenced gardens, evoking the rural elegance of the outskirts of the walled city at the turn of the 20th century.
Maria Pichardo was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on May 3, 1897, when Avenida Independencia in Santo Domingo was known as Camnino de Güiba.
Drawn from the research of CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Research Associate Vivian Guerrero Aquino, this story is part of the Institute’s Ellis Island Project, which chronicles the arrival of Dominican immigrants and preserves their personal histories.
