Caricature of Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo

Selwyn Imagelate 19th century

William Morris Gallery

William Morris Gallery
Walthamstow, London, United Kingdom

This playful caricature of Mackmurdo was drawn by his friend and collaborator Selwyn Image. It appears to be connected with an intended visit to Italy as the inscription reads: ‘The Warden of Fitzroy en voyage to salute the ashes of Tiziano (Titian) and Tintoretto in their native land. N.B. The Warden specially designed this costume as appropriate to the solemn occasion. N.B.2. ‘Twas only under much persuasion that the Warden was persuaded from going thus – au naturel.’
