Carry on the Unfinished Lifework – Song Qingling (继承遗志-宋庆龄) is a memorial work by Gu. In the painting, Song Qingling was standing in front of the portrait of Sun Yat-sen with simple wear. The whole picture is in dignified grandness, casting off the fastidious decoration in old school Chinese meticulous painting. It also absorbed the essence from Painting of Tang Dynasty and western art, drew materials from lives of Chinese people and the time. The art critic Deng Bai praised Gu’s style: Neat but not rigid, slender but not fastidious, precise and vigorous, simple but surprising. These were no strokes of random and convention. All themes were from daily life but transcended them.
