Júlio Pomar first saw Goya’s «Black Paintings» in 1950 and was deeply marked by them. Later, during another trip to Madrid, he observed a group of blind lottery sellers walking down the street, supporting one another, and recorded the scene in several drawings. The painting, which evokes Goya, incorporates a free, gestural brushstroke and addresses social themes.
