Charcoal irons played an active role in Portuguese homes in the last century. In the 1931 catalogue, CIF announced: "We manufacture several models: CIF, American, tailor, hatter and wedge. Our CIF models are the best-selling irons in the continental and overseas markets. They are fitted with a hinge coming from the foundry itself, which guarantees perfect closure and a good, continuous draft, facilitating and maintaining good combustion (...) The axis of this hinge is placed away from the heat and is therefore not destroyed as it happens with other models. All our models are perfect, manufactured with good iron, without pores and the models – CIF – have the handle and the knob of good ash wood, varnished in the colour of the wood".
