Chessmen

The ivory carving industry of Dieppe, France, dates to the beginning of French trade with West Africa. These chess figures are set upon pedestals that rise from flat bases and are of a type that became popular during the eighteenth century. A common theme among period French carvers was the French opposing Africans. Here, the French king appears in white and the African king in red.
