The artistic workshops of the Flemish city of Mechelen specialized in the elaboration of these small polychrome sculptures that were subjected to strict quality control by the guilds, both for wood carving and for polychrome and gilding. These types of devotional pieces were highly demanded and, thanks to their low cost and ease of transport, they come in Medina del Campo thanks to the close commercial contact that existed with Flanders.
