Since the 1990s, Hakamata has been one of the leading artists in the Japanese contemporary art scene. Through the concept of “sculpture,” he produces works focusing on the issue of exhibit structure and replication. He states, “all of the materials I am using, including colored acrylic, are ready-made. I feel the same way to my works’ motifs; like smoke, human body, or house; as if I am just quoting ready-made concepts to my works.” His creations start by shedding commercial products of their stereotypical concepts. Leaving behind their relic, they are incorporated into his works and transformed into new values of art between artist and viewer.
