Virginia Artigas was born in São Carlos (SP) in 1915. Between 1937 and 1938, she took drawing classes with Antonio Rocco (1880-1944). Still in the late 1930s, she was a student at the School of Fine Arts in São Paulo, where she met several artists, among them Vilanova Artigas (1915-1985), with whom she married in 1943. In the 1940s, she attended the studios of the Santa Helena Group and in 1942, studied sculpture with Bruno Giorgi. In 1945, she held her first solo exhibition, at the Brasiliense Bookstore. She illustrated books, newspapers and the Fundamentos magazine. Among the collective exhibitions in which she took part in São Paulo are “Salão Osirarte” (1941) and “Salon of the Union of Plastic Artists” (1944); she also took part in the “Exhibition of Modern Brazilian Painting” (1944 and 1945) in the United Kingdom.
