This piece was used to mark the heads of wooden flour barrels at the Servos grist mill. The first government grist mill was operated by Daniel Servos, a retired Butler’s Ranger, at Palatine Hill on Four Mile Creek near Lakeshore Road. Daniel eventually acquired the mill and the surrounding lands where he developed a large business grinding grain, milling lumber and supplying provisions to Fort George and local settlers. This branding iron belonged to Daniel’s son, John Servos, who operated the mill after his father’s death.
