The Fish Market’s surroundings progressively shaped the city’s bourgeois and commercial image, through the urban neoclassical taste embodied in the façades designs in buildings such as the Relação Prison, the Santo António Hospital and the building of the Rectory of the University of Porto, all of them turned towards Cordoaria. A bronze statue depicting Flora, created by Teixeira Lopes as a memorial to José Marques Loureiro, can also be found in the Cordoaria Garden. The composition stands as an eulogy to the memory of the horticulturist, symbolized by the withered tree, and the transient nature of the flowers held by the young nymph, the eternal spring and a symbol of rebirth.
