Snuff bottles were often used during the Qing dynasty. Owned by doctors, they contained a mixture of tobacco and other leaves as an herbal medicine. This Corundum Snuff Bottle has a monkey can be seen on the side of the bottle, seen as a guardian in Southern China, they drive off evil spirits. Below the monkey is a pheasant, symbolizing beauty and fortune.
