Costume for Onoe Baiko Ⅵ as Mashiba in "Ibaraki"

Onoe Baiko VI (1870～1934) was a representative female-role actor in the period from Meiji era to early Showa era. He was good at playing glamorous female characters and also inherited showpieces of the Otowa-ya family such like monster and ghost plays. Ibaraki was first staged by his foster father Onoe Kikugoro V, and also the signature role of Baiko who had played many times. It is a story that in order to get back his one arm cut off by Minamoto no Yorimitsu’s retainer Watanabe no Tsuna, the demon Ibaraki Doji took himself into the form of Tsuna’s aunt Mashiba and appeared. Baiko was famous for his excellent sense on the choice of costumes, and donated the costumes for Ibaraki and Tsuchigumo he usually used on stage to the Theatre Museum in Showa 5 (1930) on himself.
