Huang Ching-yi is a young female artist. The material she uses in her work is a product of consumer society - corrugated paper - produced from wood pulp made from trees and processed to standard specifications, generally for the purpose of packaging. As such, it is a characterless, mass produced packing material. Huang sticks one layer on top of another, mimicking the way organic substances, like the self reproducing paramecium, reproduce, constantly splitting and extending. As a result, a lifeless material in this particular space is seen to possess the warmth of life. This is an expression of the artist's obsession with the irrepressible nature of self growth. It also illustrates the unrestrained passion of youth and the instinctive impulse of endless expansion.
