Crucifixion

Veronese paintersecond quarter of the 14th century

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

The artist who executed this fresco was a Veronese master active at the moment of transition from the rather conventional Giottesque style of mid-century to one dominated by the personality of Altichiero. In its present state of conservation the outlines, or junctures in the plaster corresponding to individual working days can be seen easily: one encompasses the figure of Christ, two others the groups of mourners and the soldiers at his feet.
