Cross of Chiaravalle

The processional cross of Chiaravalle originates from the Abbey of the same name, where it remained until 1797. It was then transferred to the oblate monastery of San Celso, in Milan, from where it would become part of the Duomo's treasury. Dating back to the 13th century, it is the work of Venetian goldsmiths. The front part is composed of trapezoidal sheets of red jasper and represents Christ on the cross with Mary and John the Apostle on the ends; the back instead shows images of imploring sovereigns embossed and under a crystal plate; in the centre is Christ the Judge inside an almond. Cameos, filigree, and semi-precious stones embellish the work.
