The expressive way in which Christ’s suffering is portrayed stands out immediately. The thorns in the crown, for instance, pierce Christ’s head deeply; so deeply that they even emerge again under his eyebrows. Also remarkable is the pronounced chest, which is emphasised still further by the contrast with the narrow, emaciated, elongated body. Neither the dilapidated condition of the statue nor the missing arms have detracted from the expressive power of the work. The close similarities in style to a signed work by Jan van Steffeswert in Liège form the basis for attributing this corpus to the Maastricht artist.
