Crucifix

Pietro Piffettic. 1745

Palazzo Madama

Palazzo Madama
Torino, Italy

The instruments of the Passion of Christ appear in the large panels on the base, angels lift up the Holy Shroud, and rocaille cartouches bear the words: “Vidimus eum et non erat aspectus; Vere languores nostros tulit; Flagellatum tradidit eis” (Isaiah, 53, 2-5: “there is no beauty in him, nor comeliness: and we have seen him; Surely he hath borne our infirmities and carried our sorrows; But he was wounded for our iniquities”).
We do not know if the figure of the Christ was made by Piffetti, who appears to have had experience of ivory sculpture, as we see in documents dated between 1741 and 1759
