"Cupola", a special kind of city exploration

The work "Coupola" is a computer-based installation designed for a dome-shaped 360° projection environment.

Beneath a hemispherical dome construction with a diameter of twelve metres, which is suspended at a height of 2.40 metres, the viewer is presented with a panorama of the private and public living spaces of the city of Lille. Standing or lying down, they can view ceiling views of buildings in Lille - churches, public buildings, factories, shops, pubs, swimming pools and private homes - and gain an overview of the city's historical and contemporary identity.

Around 200 photographs of interiors are projected onto the entire inner surface of the dome in constant rotation. They are transformed into each other by image transformations calculated in real time. Atmospheric city sounds accompany the images acoustically. The work fuses influences from Jeffrey Shaw's work Heavens Gate with the architectural landscapes of Room with a View by Michael Bielicky, Bernd Lintermann and Torsten Belschner.
