For a long time now, knives and spoons have been used for taking up, skewering, and cutting everyday fare. Well into the 19th century, these were the only eating utensils in most households. Knives made of flint have been known since the Paleolithic, the oldest spoons come from Neolithic find sites. The fork first came up in the 16th century among the nobility, but since the 18th century it slowly established itself in common households.
