King João VI (1767-1826), second son of Queen Maria I, married to Queen Carlota Joaquina, daugther of Carlos IV of Spain. The court moved to Brazil in 1807 when confronted with the danger of the Napoleonic invasions. It returned to Portugal in 1821.
