Landscape painter Franz Steinfeld broke with the baroque tradition and is considered the father of classical Biedermeier landscape painting.

The artist "discovered" Lake Hallstatt as an outstanding classic motif of the Salzkammergut landscape. Here he does not intend the ideal view of a landscape, but as faithful a rendering as possible of a particular area. The steep, dark cliff rises from the lake; a flat-bottomed boat glides silently over water so clear that in the foreground it appears to have fathomless depths.
