The picture shows the building of the Hamburg Colonial Institute which was funded by Hamburg merchent Edmund Siemers. Main task of the Insitut was the preparation of future colonial civil servants for their service overseas. The City Parliament and the Senate resolved its founding on 6 April 1908 in which Georg Thilenius, the director of the Museum of Ethnology, was instrumental as well.
