This photograph features Decima Norman at the 1938 Empire Games at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Norman’s achievements during these games cemented her place in Australian history as being the first Australian athlete to win a gold medal in the games with an 11.1 second time in the 100 yard sprint. Norman then went onto win gold in the final leg of the 440 yard medley relay, then in long jump - achieving an Empire Games new world record, the 220 yard sprint and the 660 yard relay. She established herself as the premier athlete of the event becoming Australia's first athletics 'golden girl'.
On the 4th of January 2001, Decima Norman was recognised by the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust for her achievements in athletics and is remembered by an honorary plaque in the Sydney Cricket Ground’s famous Walk of Honour.
