In 1973, this part of a human cranium was found in fluvial sand from the river Elbe during dredging works between Hahnöfersand and Cranz. A recent study dates this frontal bone to the 6th millennium BC. No older human bone has been found in the Hamburg region, as of yet. Unfortunately, little is known about this “eldest inhabitant of Hamburg” or how he met his end. The bone may be a burial remnant, or maybe this Stone Age person was killed in a hunting accident.
