William Morris Gallery

William Morris Gallery
Walthamstow, London, United Kingdom

This design is the first of four cartoons designed and made for the window of a landing in Burne-Jones' house in Rottingdean, Sussex. The windows (now in the V&A: C.623 to 626-1920) depict the story of the Quest for the Sangreal (Holy Grail).

This cartoon depicts the failure of Sir Lancelot to see the Holy Grail due to his aultery with Guinevere, with whom he is shown in conversation. The angel with the grail turns away. Below the inscription reads: "HOW LANCELOT SOUGHT THE SANGREAL AND MIGHT NOT SEE IT BECAUSE HIS EYES WERE BLINDED BY SUCH LOVE AS DWELLETH IN KINGS' HOUSES".
