Seurat draws two female figures not from lines but with tiny touches of crayon rubbed over the paper in varying degrees of pressure to increase the density and velvety tones of the shadowy forms. He used this technique in painting as well; called Pointillism, paint is applied in small touches of pure color without mixing or overlapping and, when viewed from a suitable distance, reacts optically, creating exceptionally vibrant colors.
