Between March and May 2017, the company DHL-Express in Frankfurt am Main and Utrecht (in the Netherlands) tested an environmentally-friendly city hub concept using DHL Cubicycle for the first time. The "City-Hub" is a flexible, inner-city mini depot in which a maximum of 4 containers can be used to hold express shipments. The bicycle courier installs the container box on-site directly on the Cubicycle and then distributes the consignments. Each City Hub station can replace up to 2 delivery vehicles (annual savings of approximately 17.6 tons of CO2).
This DHL Cubicycle was driven in Utrecht in 2017 and was donated to the Museum for Communication Frankfurt to mark the opening of the new permanent exhibition in 2017. The very first DHL Cubicycle was already being tested in 2015 in the Dutch city of Almere.
