The series "Rust" consists of a polyptych of 12 drawings. These "drawings" were created by time and rust. They are various pieces of metal - shavings, scraps, moldings - placed on stretched and moistened leather scraps that I left exposed to the elements for weeks. When I removed them, I discovered these marks that could be seen as wounds, signs, patterns, or designs. Each material - leather and metal - is reinterpreted and collected from different places near where I live. I relate these pieces to ancient manuscripts, written and illustrated on parchment - a material made from different animal skins. I am interested in translating gestures and thoughts through the act of drawing/printing on the skin, like a tattoo on the body. And over time, I hope the marks gradually intensify and shape, becoming extensions and witnesses of memory, like manuscripts or fossils.
I believe I return to these materials and forms, to the natural world, because there are signs there that trace a path already marked. I like to think that there is an enormous amount of information that has been permeating us since the beginning of times, and that all possible messages can be contained within an artwork.
