In the course of the reconstruction work in 1962, due to WWII, debris began to be cleared away from a corner property at Kreuslerstraße/Speersort. During the excavation work for a new building a startling and sensational archaeological discovery was made, which is now known beyond the borders of Hamburg as the “bishop tower“.
It consists of an enormous stone ring with an outside diameter of 19 metres, constructed of boulders. A smaller stone ring following directly in the west turned out to be a bricked well pit, which still reached over four meters depth.
The bishop tower is one of the most important heritage buildings of Hamburg. This has to be preserved as a visible testimony of early town’s development. Since 1969 the foundation remains are accessible to the public as a branch office of the Archaeological Museum of Hamburg.
