Feathers colours cover the entire colour spectrum.
They function in visual communication between birds, as camouflage from predators — and can also function in protecting the feather structure.
But how do feathers get their colours?

There are basically two different kinds of colouring: pigment colours and structural colours.

Feather pigments are stored in the feathers and produce the most varied colours.
Many pigments are manufactured by the animal itself but some need to be ingested with the food, at least as precursors. Structural colours are produced by special structures like prisms in the keratin framework of the feather.
