Nyagakecuru was a nickname to Benginzage known in the history as a woman who ruled Bungwe Kingdom, now Huye and Nyaruguru Districts and who resisted Rwandan Kings when they were still expanding the country.
She took the power when her husband Samukende died during 16th Century. Nyagakecuru was residing at the top of mountain Huye and her home was surrounded by several plants of Acanthus montanus species (Bear’s breech or Mountain thistle).
Apart of equipped soldiers, according to oral traditions, she was also protected by a Python.
