This 1973 dinner menu from the P&O liner SS ORONSAY shows one of a series of paintings of famous sea battles. Painted by John Smith with notes (verso) by Captain Eric Bush, the image is of the Battle of the Dardanelles, 18 March 1915.
A combined British and French fleet attempted to force the Dardanelles Strait but was unable to penetrate past Turkish forts and minefields. The fleet suffered heavy losses, prompting the Anzac landings of 25 April.
Known as the Battle of Çanakkale in Turkey, the 18th of March is regarded as a great victory and remains a national day of commemoration
