When a woman was fed up with her marriage, she had a right to request for a divorce. The divorce took place on open ground where the relatives of the woman and man sat on opposite sides. The man was made to sit down with his legs spread out and the woman crossed the man's legs seven times. this finalized the divorce, for it was a taboo to cross over one's husband and seven is considered a bad number by the Kikuyu.
