The primordial, turbulent nature of the Douro, a river of indomitable waters, of shoals and sandbanks, whose flow varies greatly over the year, was drastically altered by the building of hydroelectric dams. From a river that was tough to navigate, as Almeida Garrett (1700-1854) noted, to a Douro of calm waters which invites contemplation of nature and travel, a territory has been built with a singular landscape.
