This drum is an important ceremonial and sporting instrument used in dragon boat racing. At the bow of the boat, the drummer beats time for the paddlers. There is also much drum beating and splashing at the start of the ceremony to scare fish away. This timber drum was carved in the Hunan province of China in 1999, to be exported to Australia for dragon boat competition
