The Cordoban archivist José de la Torre y del Cerro was a friend and colleague of great scholars of the time: Enrique Romero de Torres, Rafael de la Hoz, Juan Díaz del Moral, José María Rey Díaz, and Samuel de los Santos, etc. He had an intimate friendship with Samuel de los Santos, leading him to intervene in his favor when his friend was ousted to Badajoz, awaiting execution by firing squad: “...the second [Santos Jener] might be reinstated; and I would be greatly heartened, because he is a good and very competent person who is in an extremely difficult financial situation, in addition to his illness caused by such upset”. The fatal outcome was not to be and, as a way of thanking his friend, Santos Jener drew this magnificent picture in 1938.
