The Department for Culture and Historic Heritage is responsible for overseeing and protecting Andalusia's documentary heritage. It also directly manages ten of the most important historical archives in the region: the eight Provincial Historical Archives, the Archive of the Royal Chancery of Granada, and the General Archive of Andalusia. Through this work, the Department manages to preserve and promote the abundant heritage held within the Andalusian archives.
