Drilling was one of the technological innovations of the Neolithic. In order to join a stone axe to its haft, it had to be equipped with a shaft hole. For this, a hollow rod of elderberry wood or a hollow bone was rotated by means of a bow. By adding sand and water, a hole was drilled into the axe head.
