For many children, folding origami is their first experience with sculptures; with just their hands, they transform a flat piece of paper into a three-dimensional object. In this series, artist Ting-Ruei Syu creates Eagle—the efforts of environmental conservation should go beyond that of human concerns, and include other life forms in the environment; Scottish Terrier—to recollect that forgotten simplicity from one’s childhood; Chameleon—to explore the latent and explicit interpersonal and psychological states. Syu uses scrap materials to create his artwork. He reevaluates the role of the consumer in a materialistic society, and questions whether economic benefits can also be environmental benefits. His use of metal media is just one way he expresses his care for the environment.
