Underneath the church of Tostedt, erected in stone, the outlines of two smaller, wooden predecessors were found during excavations. Such wooden churches were the oldest churches in Northern Germany. They stem from the earliest time of the Christianisation. These outlines of the Tostedt churches are archaeological finds with an importance far beyond Northern Germany, because it is extremely difficult to find evidence of such wooden buildings.
