The main purpose of railway signalling systems is to manage circulation and ensure the necessary safety conditions for the trains. The horns and conductor whistles were the communication and sound signalling instruments between the workers at the level crossings, stations and trains.
These accompanied the various railway workers in their day-to-day activities. The different encoded sounds and rhythms conveyed different instructions that would apply to the movement and operation of trains.
The conductor whistle was used exclusively by the stationmaster to give trains the departure order.
