Since 2016, a team of highly specialised technical divers has been descending to the site to carry out surveys and systematic recovery of objects. Excavations of a test trench measuring four by two meters were started in 2018. Following two seasons of excavation the team has reached the lower levels of the cargo exposing ballast stones and some small timber elements of the ship's hull. Moreover, a number of smaller objects have been recovered including a rare urn and a very distinctive fineware bowl. To date, this is the deepest archaeological excavation carried out by divers.
