Excerpted Scripts for Onoe Kikugoro Ⅵ

Onoe Kikugoro VI, a representative actor of 20th century, was the own child of Kikugoro V. He was sent to study with Ichikawa Danjuro XI according to his father’s policy, and learned Danjuro’s acting style which attached importance to the expression of human heart. Kikugoro inherited Edo-style roles that his father was good at, and also participated in creating new plays while studying how to play roles accurately at the same time without any negligence. Excerpts of characters’ lines were made by item for each main actors in each production. Actors used to remember their lines through excerpts, but it was assumed that they would not get any excerpt in the second production of the same play, so actors preserved those excerpts with care even after their performances. This play script was collected for reference and record of plays which he did not performed.
