In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Júlio Pomar devoted several works to the biblical theme of Adam and Eve, revisiting the original myth through different formulations. During this period, his painting recovered a gestural quality and narrative dynamism that had been particularly evident in his work of the 1960s. The works of these decades engage with myths, narratives and stories, reflecting the artist’s enduring interest in the History of Art, but also in its reinvention and subversion. Figures frequently appear transformed, subverting their conventional representations and introducing a critical, humorous and at times ironic dimension. In this phase, Pomar seems to bring together a range of formal procedures and resources developed throughout his oeuvre, integrating the blurring of figure and ground, narratives of action and conflicting forces, the fusion of bodies, historical narratives, the erotic and animal, and the incorporation of objects into painting.
