Wrocław, Poland

The artist recreated a scene from the biblical Book of Ezekiel – the prophetic vision of the resurrection of the dead. The prophet is shown in its centre surrounded by a crowd of naked figures in a variety of complicated poses and sophisticated twists of their bodies, which reflects both the Mannerist tendencies of Fendt and his skill in painting nudes. The image on the canvas corresponded perfectly with the perished text of the poem inscribed on the epitaph, which described the yearning of the deceased woman for her husband, and her hope for their meeting in the next life. The picture remains among the best pictures by this painter from Antwerp who worked in Wrocław between 1565 and 1576.
