This fan leaf depicts the signing of a marriage contract. The couple hold hands rather self-consciously in front of two lawyers, who are seated at a table with the marriage documents in front of them. A group of witnesses sits behind the bride and groom, whispering and chatting. Flagons of wine and barrels of ale lying nearby suggest that a hearty wedding feast is being prepared. This scene demonstrates the importance of the legal arrangements involved in marriage, especially for those with wealth and property. Until the Marriage Act of 1753, a marriage in England could take place without a church ceremony.
