Located on the outskirts of the medieval city, the fishing community of S. Pedro de Miragaia attests to Porto’s commercial expansion westwards. Shipbuilding, along with trading activity and fishing, developed along this riverfront. The construction of the Nova Alfândega (New Customs House) in 1861, over a wide embankment, led to the center of Miragaia becoming separated from the riverbank. The memory of more prosperous times lingers in the intricate design of the façades.
